Improve Employee Productivity Through Nutrition: An Action Plan for Employers

Nutrition as a Productivity Tool
Employee productivity is shaped by more than software, meetings, deadlines, and management systems. It is also influenced by energy levels, concentration, hydration, meal timing, digestion, and overall health.
That is why we created this simple 7-step action plan and an employee handout, available below.
For employers, nutrition is one of the most practical areas of workplace wellness because even small changes can make healthy choices easier during the workday.
The goal is not to control what employees eat. The goal is to create an environment where better food, hydration, and meal habits are easier to maintain.
TeamNutrition.ca Registered Dietitians and nutritionists support individuals and organizations with practical, evidence-based nutrition strategies. We offer online nutrition counselling through online dietitian and nutritionist services across Canada, as well as support through local offices including Mississauga, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, and Lévis, just to name a few.
Why Employers Should Care About Nutrition
Employers do not need a large wellness budget to help. A clear action plan can improve the workplace food environment and make healthy routines easier.
Many workplace energy problems are linked to simple, everyday habits:
- Skipping breakfast or lunch because of meetings
- Long gaps without food
- Relying on sweets, pastries, or high-sugar snacks for quick energy
- Not drinking enough water
- Eating lunches that are too low in protein or fibre
- Feeling confused by conflicting nutrition information online
- Managing digestive issues, diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, or other health concerns without enough support
These patterns can contribute to fatigue, irritability, cravings, reduced focus, and lower well-being.

1. Protect Real Lunch Breaks
Avoid scheduling recurring meetings during lunch when possible. Encourage managers to model meal breaks instead of eating at their desks every day.
Action item: Block a default lunch window in team calendars or create a “no recurring lunch meetings” guideline.
2. Improve Food Options at Meetings and Events
Healthy eating becomes easier when better choices are visible and convenient.
Offer options such as:
- Fruit
- Yogurt
- Nuts or trail mix
- Cheese and whole-grain crackers
- Vegetables and hummus
- Whole-grain sandwiches or wraps
- Water and sparkling water
- Balanced catering meal options
Treats do not need to disappear. The goal is to avoid making sugary snacks the only option.
Action item: Create a standard “balanced catering checklist” for meetings and company events.
3. Make Hydration Easy
Even mild dehydration can contribute to headaches, fatigue, and reduced concentration.
Action item: Make water available in meeting rooms, near workstations, and during events. Encourage employees to bring their reusable bottles.
4. Offer Dietitian-Led Nutrition Workshops
Employees are exposed to a lot of nutrition misinformation. Registered Dietitians can turn evidence into practical strategies employees can actually use.
Useful workshop topics include:
- Eating for steady energy and focus
- Meal planning for busy professionals
- Healthy eating while working from home
- Nutrition for shift workers
- Managing afternoon energy crashes
- Heart-healthy eating
- Healthy lunches in less than 10 minutes
- Nutrition strategies for stress and sleep
Action item: Offer one practical nutrition workshop per quarter.
5. Add Dietitian Services to Employee Benefits
Find registered Dietitians covered by third-party insurance who can support employees with preventive health, diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, digestive concerns, weight management, sports nutrition, pregnancy nutrition, family nutrition, and more.
Action item: Review your benefits plan and make sure dietitian services are clearly covered and communicated to employees.
6. Support Remote, Hybrid, and Shift-Based Employees
Not every employee has the same schedule, kitchen access, budget, or routine. Nutrition support should reflect real life.
Action item: Provide practical resources for different work situations, such as quick lunches, portable snacks, shift-work meal planning, and work-from-home routines.
7. Share Simple Employee Resources
Employees are more likely to act when advice is clear, short, and realistic.
Action item: Share the handout below by email, in Slack/Teams, on the intranet, or as part of your wellness program.
Why Work With a Registered Dietitian?
In Canada, the title “Registered Dietitian” is regulated. This means dietitians meet professional education and practice standards and are accountable to a provincial regulatory body.
This matters because nutrition advice can affect medical conditions, medication interactions, digestion, body image, eating behaviours, and long-term health. Employees deserve advice from qualified professionals, not trends or generic internet content.
TeamNutrition.ca Registered Dietitians provide practical, personalized, and evidence-based support for employees and organizations.
